I’m always on the lookout for a great new lip product, and the concept of this L’oreal Infallible Matte Max Lip colour sounded great. A sponge applicator that is dipped in product allowing you to go from ombre to full-on matte lip – its sounded too interesting to miss!
There are 6 shades in the collection, mostly deeper reds and pinks, alongside a bold purple colour.
I picked up the shad 007 Say My Name, for £6.99 from Superdrug. It is a beautiful cool-toned red which I actually loved (rare, as I usually do not like red lips on me).
The applicator is a new one for me. A rounded dome-shaped sponge that is dipped in product that sits within the lid itself.
The idea is that you can build up as much coverage as you want and I found that it was easy to do so. I’m not one to go for an ombre lip on a day-to-day basis but it was definitely fun to experiment with building up the coverage and colour on different parts of my lips.
The formula is very matte, as the name would suggest! No shine, no drying time – just a straight, flat matte.
It’s not the most pigmented lip colour but I guess that is so you can build up the coverage that you want. I tended to build it up as much as possible to get an opaque red, but if a sheerer look is your thing then this product could be great for you.
It didn’t dry down like a traditional liquid lipstick, which means that it is not transfer-proof. It also meant that it tends to bleed beyond my lip line, which is not the best look. A lip liner would therefore be advisable if you want to use this product.
The only drawback to the formula in my opinion is that it was pretty drying. Considering that it doesn’t fully dry down, I found that kind of surprising. I’m guessing it was the very matte nature of the product that caused this, as it does not feel moisturising on the lips at all.
Below are some swatches of my lips with some foundation over the top to provide a blank ‘canvas’, then a light layer and finally several layers to build up an opaque colour on the lips. (You can definately see the bleeding in the final picture, some lip liner is seriously needed there!)
I have mixed feelings about this product. I like the concept of a buildable lip colour and the applicator is really easy to use. However, the fact that it feels dry on the lips but also bleeds beyond the lip line is both confusing and annoying. Maybe check this product out if you are interested in experimenting with it but otherwise, give it a miss.
