Maybelline Lash Sensational Luscious Mascara

My Maybelline Lash Sensational is a well-loved item in my makeup bag, as I’m sure it is in many of yours. Indeed, Maybelline claims that the Lash Sensational is the UK’s number one mascara. This isn’t hard to believe as the volume and length that this mascara gives is amazing – definitely one of my all-time Holy Grail products.

So when I saw in my local Superdrug that they had a new product in the range, the Maybelline Lash Sensational Luscious Mascara, of course I couldn’t resist picking it up.

The Wand
To my disappointment the wand is different to the original Lash Sensational (which has an aaaamazing curved wand!). The wand on this mascara is a kind of cone-shaped with a thick bottom tapering to a thinner tip.

Maybelline states that “The arch-shaped brush reaches from the longest to the smallest of lashes volumising every layer and contains a reservoir that holds the enriched formula in the bristles, filling the lash line instantly”. I actually found the wand a little difficult to use, as the thicker bit made it difficult to use the whole wand across the lash line.

However, the ‘reservoir’ on the brush meant that a lot of product was dispensed on to the wand, making it easy to coat the lashes with product.

Maybelline states that the formula is “enriched with a blend of precious oils; rose, safflower and argan oil for a softer, denser lash multiplying effect”. The idea of an oil-rich formula is what drew me to this mascara in the first place. I often worry that mascaras dry out my lashes, making them brittle and more likely to break off. Therefore, I hoped that a moisturising mascara would hydrate my eyelashes and keep them healthy.

The first thing I noticed when applying this mascara is how fluid it is. Maybelline does in fact call this it’s “liquid Ink formula”. It is very thin and liquid, as opposed to the thick, even gloopiness, of some other mascaras. On the one hand this is great as it helps to easily coat the lashes and ensures that it feels hydrating.

However, it does also make it very easy to get the mascara everywhere! The first time I tried to use it on my bottom lashes, I managed to smudge it all under my eyes – so definitely look out for that. It also means that it does not have great staying power. Generally, when I apply mascara it will set down hard, meaning that it will not move throughout the day whether I’m running errands to running on a treadmill at the gym. However, the Lash Sensational Luscious mascara did not fare so well. If I wear it to the gym or simply wear it on a hot day when I am sweating, it will smudge under my eyes. Nothing too drastic but obviously not ideal!

I’m a little on the fence about this mascara. The liquidy nature of the formula gives great length to the lashes, as it coats them fully from root to tip. On the flip side, however, this means that it does have a tendency to clump the lashes together, giving you little in the way of volume. Clumpiness is a personal pet peeve for me in mascaras and I often find myself having to use a different mascara after this one in order to separate out my lashes again. See below for a before and after comparison:

However, this wasn’t a complete deal breaker as I can live with a clumpy lash here and there (if you can’t maybe steer clear of this one!) Ultimately though, the finish just wasn’t as good as the original Lash Sensational.

If you are looking for a really long-wearing mascara this is perhaps not the one to go for. However, if you want a product that feels moisturising and gives nice length to the lashes, it might be worth checking out. Overall though, I would recommend the original Lash Sensational over this new one – if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
